Children's Book Council
A good place for the aspiring children's book author to get started. The FAQ section gives a lot of practical information about the proper way to submit a book, agents, and general publishing in's and out's. Their member's list is an excellent resource, too.

The WGA
No, not the Western Grower's Association. This is the website for the Writer's Guild of America west. There's plenty of interesting articles that deal primarily with the art of writing for film and television.
This is where it all started for me. The Groundlings are an excellent improv/comedy troupe that has supplied a lot of talented actors, writers, and producers to the entertainment industry. Having to perform my own scripts in front of a live audience gave me the ability to ruthlessly edit written material down to "what works". Check out the site for info on famous alums, classes, and show times.

The National Novel Writing Month
Every November, this contest challenges authors to crank out a novel by the end of the month. It's a fun event designed to
defeat the procrastinator that lurks in the heart of every aspiring novelist. Give it a try if you want to go from saying "I should write a novel someday." to "I wrote a novel last month!".
