A Guide to Scuba Diving Equipment
If you are one of the millions of people who want to try scuba diving, then it is important that you have the proper scuba diving equipment to let you have the best possible scuba diving experience. Here is a list of some of the essential equipment that you will need if you are going to scuba dive for the first time.
A scuba diving mask is the first equipment that you need. It is important that you buy a mask that contours to the shape of your face, especially to your brows and cheekbones. You can choose from a wide selection of designs. To find the best mask, you should try the mask on your face without putting the strap around your head. If you try your face mask see to it that there are no gaps and that air does not get inside if you try to inhale through your nose.
A snorkel is part of your scuba diving equipment. There are many snorkel designs that you can choose from. Look for the snorkel mouthpiece that will fit your mouth well. The snorkel should attach well to your mask. Snorkel size will also affect your experience. A large snorkel will give you more drag but a small snorkel will not hold much air if you dive underwater with it.
You should also have a pair of flippers or fins. When you buy flippers, the experience is just like buying shoes. You should feel comfortable wearing your flippers. If your thigh muscles are strong then you can use a larger fin. If you want to dive long dont buy flippers that are too large because this will cause muscle fatigue over time.
You can keep your body heat while you dive by wearing a wetsuit. Your body can be insulated from very cold waters since they are made of neoprene rubber or spandex. Make sure your wetsuit fits you well so water will not get in. You dont want your body heat to transfer into the water but this will happen if you get wet. Make sure the wrists, ankle, and collars have seals to prevent water from entering. If there are flaps behind zippers then your suit will be properly sealed. Wetsuits are expensive but you can get it at a bargain if you buy it from a used gear shop.
If you are going scuba diving, then you will need life support equipment. The BC or vest is a life support equipment that can hold your air tank and contains buoyant pieces of foam that can help you float to the surface. You can change weight in the vest for sinking or rising to surface through the valves on the BC. These are expensive but they can be used for many long years.
Another life support equipment is a regulator. The regulator provides air that you can breathe from your pressurized air tank.
If you want to be able to identify your equipment when there are many people on the boat with you, then you need scuba diving tags. A scuba luggage tag can identify your equipment when there is a large group with you.
